However, it is once again one would ask that whether it is feasible to use only one layer of irregular membrane elements to model the bending problems of beams. Three different meshes densities shown in Table 6 are used to compute the displacement and stress of the membrane. This skew membrane presents the typical features of the in-plane deformation of plane stress problems in theory of elasticity as the in-plane bending is not the dominant deformation. Therefore, it is a suitable membrane problem to be solved by membrane elements using coarse meshes and it can serve as a good benchmark for the accuracy comparison of membrane elements in real engineering problems. The results in Table 4 show that QCQ4-1 and QCQ4-2 deliver very accurate results for both displacements and stresses, especially when the Poisson effect is taken into account.
