Therefore, it only makes sense to throw out the heavy-useless OEM exhaust system, replacing it with a full exhaust, catback, or at least an X-pipe. Unfortunately, many OEM exhaust systems use very small diameter piping, which usually results in poor exhaust gas flow. If your car has poor exhaust gas flow, you might want to consider adding aftermarket performance exhaust parts. The purpose of an aftermarket exhaust system is to eliminate exhaust gas restriction and improve power. With those cars in mind, it’s safe to say the only reason automakers are putting fake tips on vehicles is for aesthetic appeal. Basically, the fake tips allow a designer a little more freedom when styling the rear end of the car. Exhaust tips get hot, and you can’t have your funky-shaped exhaust tip touching the plastic of your bumper or you’re going to melt something.
Last, but not least, the lighter overall weight of the Supersprint exhaust system further enhances the handling characteristics of the E55 AMG. The stock max torque figure of 715.7 Nm, which occurs at 3745 rpm, is now reached at 2700 rpm with the Supersprint full exhaust in place, over 1000 rpm lower in the power band. Each one of the individual components of the Supersprint exhaust has been designed and tested with the specific goal of the best performance and the optimum results can only be achieved by using all of the components together. The final result of the full Supersprint exhaust system is a substantial increase in performance and torque, from the lower rpm range, all the way to the rev limit. The key component of the Supersprint E55 AMG exhaust, instrumental to best performance, are the headers. This Supersprint exhaust component uses before - and -after-cat Lambda sensor ports, and is totally compatible with the car's own OBD II emission management system. Maintaining the exhaust temperature as low as possible is extremely critical on all of the supercharged Mercedes engines. These features guarantee a dramatic reduction of the exhaust gas backpressure, and also allows for lower engine temperature in the head exhaust ports' area, when under a load, especially at medium and high rpm. The front section of the Supersprint exhaust uses 2 large volume, 100cpsi Metallic catalytic converters, one cat each side. The stock system, on the contrary, uses a grand total of 4 cats , 2 of them are positioned very close to the cylinder heads, and their rating is 400cpsi and over.
It achieves similar goals—reducing turbo lag and improving low-end torque—but it's a separate device from the turbocharger. The M139 offers a maximum of 414 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, and it's unclear how these numbers will change with the addition of the new electric turbocharger. The idea is to blend the quick response of a smaller turbo with the power-generating-capability of a big one. As with an F1 MGU-H, the electric motor is mounted directly to the shaft that connects the turbine and compressor wheels. The motor is driven off a 48-volt electrical system and starts spinning up the compressor wheel before exhaust gasses spin up the turbine. For the straight-line bits, I just set the driving mode to comfort and listened to the background rumble. For the curvy bits, I dialed it to Sport Plus and chucked it into corners like a toddler in a power wheel. It’s not just sound, of course, handling, too, considering the car's size, more than 187 inches long, is impressive. Plenty of grip from the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and generally good responses to inputs. Furthermore, the seats provide plenty of lumbar support and adjustable upper bolstering as well.
Didn't know about this post, but started another regarding the same subject. I was curious why the dash button seemed to not activate the exhaust flap like as if it was by wire, and wrong guessed it might be a function of intake vacuum. Seems strangely overly complicated, and such a huge engineering effort for so little gains in sound and performance. A more reasonable approach might have been to have it open in constant state during sport+, and or over-ridden by the dash button. I do love the car as is, and down the road I may opted for a high performance exhaust system with higher flow and more control over the rear flap, but for now, the car continues to be a joy to drive. While doing my research, I noticed that Wavetech has a video on how to disable the exhaust valve and force it to stay open. It is a good video and a good way to keep the exhaust valve open. Keeping the exhaust valve open let's exhaust gas flow out the passenger side tail pipe and gives you the performance exhaust sound 24/7. The downside of his method is that you are susceptible to throwing a CEL code / error code. There are some people who have experienced this when using his method.
The exhaust pipes are responsible for carrying gasses through a muffler that helps to dampen the noises of your engine and the gases escaping. You have your basic exhaust tailpipe, but you can change the end of the pipe to upgrade the performance of your vehicle and also affect the look of it as well. Exhaust tips can change the sound that your exhaust system makes when expelling gases. There are a ton of different muffler tips to choose from, including single and double-walled ones. At the same time, it makes the sound deep, throaty when lugging the engine in the mid rpm, without any droning, and wildly screaming up on top of the powerband. Test drive a CLA/GLA with the performance exhaust, see if its worth the trouble. This All Stainless Steel Adapter kit allows the installation of the Mercedes-Benz OEM exhaust mufflers from G550, AMG G55 or AMG G63 vehicles onto the stock Mercedes-Benz G500 from 2002 on. This will give the G500 a truly dual exhaust system as found on the later or the AMG G-wagen models. For the exhaust I also though myself i was going to receive a small package with just the chrome pipe. look at picture n°3 you have the original one pipe AMG that came with the AMG package and the 4 pipes exhaust that I bough. All cross sections have been incresed over stock by around 10%, to give the best balance of torque, incresed power, enganced sound, and ultimate performance.
From typical AMG to restrained, the sound of the AMG Performance exhaust system fully adapts to the currently selected drive program by means of three variably adjustable exhaust gas flaps. Mercedes will employ a similar electric turbocharger in its ONE hypercar, which borrows the engine from its 2017 F1 car. AMG announced today that it'll use an electric turbocharger developed with Garrett in a future production model. A Mercedes spokesperson told Road & Track that this turbo will be used on a variant of AMG's 2.0-liter M139 currently used in the new 45-series cars. Mercedes isn't yet announcing what model this turbo will debut with, but it's worth noting that last year, reports emerged saying AMG might abandon the V-8 for the next C63, and instead adopt some sort of four-cylinder. This electric-turbocharged M139 certainly sounds like it could be it.
